Two years of Project rene a full recap on it (REALLY LONG)

Recommended Posts

To celebrate Rene’s second anniversary I've decided to write this post so we have a space that contains everything about this upcoming game in one place, a lot of things have been misinterpreted or taken to a total extreme point. (i want to clarify that im not a leaker a dataminer or a playtester everything that you see here is out in the internet and is not hard to find)

Also most credits of this go to u/DzXAnt22D and u/Vegetable_Ear_4141 if it wasn't for you we would never saw any of this and I really recommend you to see their post cause they expand on this a lot

thanks to boring bones too

Starting this post here’s an official timeline of the project (it doesn't include leaks or the time that they happened just information based on official sources)

Common misunderstandings https://imgur.com/a/rbpTklV

Before starting with the post I want to clarify some common misunderstandings about project rene.

-Project Lotus and Rene are the same thing, with Lotus being its previous codename before the 202 reveal.

-Project dolores is the mobile game “the sims town stories”, the only “Main” sims games that are available or in development currently are The Sims 4 and Rene.

-Project rene is still releasing on both mobile and pc (console ports could be coming too excluding ps5 but that has to do more with sony than EA/Maxis)

-The latest playtest wasn’t for testing live mode or cas features it was for multiplayer servers or “The hub” as they call it

-This game is not a MMO it still has a single player mode (we don’t know if its requires a constant internet connection but i think it doesn’t, based on icons that we’ve seen)

Timeline

This whole timeline is based on news posted by “The SimsCommunity” You can check their website to see each item more in-depth

  • development started around the second half of 2018
  • on April 20, 2019, Lindsay Pearson announces SimguruGrant’s department from The Sims 4, but he kept working with maxis
  • in a free update in september 2019 they added an object called “Arch e” and it included the following description “There were four prototypes… the first prototype didn’t open, the second prototype refined the concept, removing the defect by making a hole, the third prototype increased the size of the hole, the fourth prototype removed the sharp edges that were causing an increase in workplace accidents. The fifth, Arch E, should be great…”
  • May 2020, The Sims 5 and the possibility of it having online features is mentioned on a magazine
  • June 2020, more job listings indicated that the next sims game was being developed in unreal engine.
  • January 2021, another job listing suggest that the sims 5 could be multiplayer
  • June 2021, a secret project called “Lotus” is mention for the first time in another job listing
  • April 2022, Unreal engine becomes EA standard engine for game development
  • September 2022 rumors about the sims 5 start surfacing online
  • October 2022, project rene is revealed on the first behind the sims: summit livestream, and they promised to bring us all together in its development
  • Behind the sims 001, SimguruGrant is presented as the game director for the game, he explains that rene is NOT an MMO and we’ll still have our normal sims experience (This episode was private for several months, actually it doesn't appear if search it but it does appear in the behind the sims playlist)
  • Behind the sims 001, we got an sneak peek to more features like it’s visual art direction, routines for townies and deeper characters interactions
  • Behind the sims 003, Lindsay pearson states that project rene and the sims 4 a looking forward to co-exist in the future and that it isn't going to replace it, also she confirmed the possibility of rene including aspects that were only available in dlc into base game like seasons/weather
  • EA announces that The Sims 4 is still going and they are not working on the sims 5

World https://imgur.com/a/yMV9t4D

This section of the post will discuss and overview the world of Project Rene. The same is subject to changes and might/is missing a lot more content besides what we’ll see here.

-It's a Paris-inspired city. It’s been speculated that it will be bigger than anything we’ve seen in the latest Sims installment. It is leaning towards a multiple neighborhood system all in the same city and accessible via public transport such as subways and buses. Cars are still a debate. In my opinion, there’s a high chance that cars are, in fact, functional.

-The city will be full of life. Using Unreal Engine 5's latest technology, the Sims team looks forward to including things like bigger crowds and even traffic in this city.

-Expanding even more, the city will also feature different types of spaces in the building shells, as we could see in episode 002 of Behind the Sims not only shops but also restaurants, bars, and offices seem to be a part of the city and play an important role in our sims routines.

-Stuff that we used to see in routinary expansion packs in most of the sims games is now a part of the base game, stuff like seasons, weather and even apartments are aiming to be a part of Project Rene at launch and this time for free.

-Other visual improvements to the world are Volumetric clouds whose description reads as follows,

The Volumetric Cloud component is a physically-based cloud rendering system that uses a material-driven approach to give artists and designers the freedom to create any type of cloud they need for their projects. The cloud system handles dynamic time-of-day setups that are complemented by the Sky Atmosphere and skylight using the real-time capture mode. The system provides scalable, artist-defined clouds that can adapt to projects using ground views, flying, and ground-to-outer space transitions.

Also, Parallax Interiors, a plugin used in games like Marvel’s Spiderman, can be used to create entire rooms by using just one polygon, it expands to retail, offices, and rooms, and it’ll be used to create a full environment without risking too much performance.

World management and world editing tools

These two possible upcoming tools are worth mentioning separately

-The first one and without many mysteries around it is our already known Manage World tool, present nowadays in The Sims 4 but it doesn’t allow us to do much more besides editing households and lots of buildings, and it’s not looking very different in rene.

-The other and more interesting tool is one called Designer-World, alongside feature files such as Empty-World and Build-Test World, it is also tied with building shells and other test objects that we still don’t have a guess what they could be.

Build/Buy mode https://imgur.com/a/GdrHG3I

This is the second part of the game that we know the most about

-DzxAnt22 video about build buy: https://streamable.com/guwvh2 (2022 playtest mobile build)

Build mode

Regarding build mode there’s not much information, we’ll still aren't sure if it's part of the game, in my opinion it will be but they might be looking forward to get it right not like the sims 4 which as we know launched without pools, terrain tools etc. This is a list of what we know so far:

-We can create rooms (while revisiting this i noticed a draw a wall tool which confirms that we will be able to create walls the sam)

-Walls can be angled and have 3d trims

-Pools are a part of base game and also have different trims

Buy mode

-Starting off, buy mode was the first playtested feature back in 2022.

-includes, color wheel, pattern and size customization

-adds a new accent section to most pieces of furniture you add up to 20 pieces of clutter to them

-each piece of clutter can be rotated and even size up or down

-When sizing up or down objects like couches or tables you can get more sitting slots to them

-we’ll be able also to change the part of the objects

-on the gallery we’ll be able to share our custom pieces of furniture or even entire sets as now we are able to select more than one

-copypaste has its own button now

-We can search pieces of furniture online through a discovery button

-You can invite or join your friends to play with them

-There’s an accent called “BOB PANCAKES”

Live mode https://imgur.com/a/7JiHC0t

This is where the fun begins imo, live mode is extremely complete even in this pre-alpha playtest.

-most of the animations also have a variant to create more diversity

-while cooking our sims are able to multitask

-Break fast and multiple grill cheese types are the foods done right now

-sims will have a commodity level

-caffeine affects our sims

-we might be able to change how fast our sims motives go down

-time scaling is present in this game: fast, normal, slow and super speed are present in the files and can be seen in behind the sims footage

-Active careers are a part of the base game

-roommates could be included in the base game

-townies will have schedules and routines

-Happy and sad memories

-relationships work the same way as the sims 4 by having different levels for romantic and friendship relations

-the emotion system is also the same as the sims 4

-based on their needs and emotions the sims will behave differently and will display different animations

-there could be difficulties when falling asleep

-neighbors making noise is a part of the base game

-sims can interact with each other (kiss, hug, high five, etc) regardless of their height

-interaction between sims, cooking, eating etc as their animations appear in the files.

Create a sim https://imgur.com/a/XB1LNp4

-the overall artstyle of the sims follows the sims 4 one but taking a step further into a bit more of a cartoon style

-based in job listings and files found in both playtests we can confirm that characters will highly detailed textures, at some point they even tested eyes reflections

-height sliders

-advanced fat customization

-we’ll be able to change the size of our sims hands, feet etc

-body hairs are a part of the basegame

-accurate black hairstyles

-probably compatibility with sims 4 cas objects (one of the sims from the latest playtest has a hair from highschool years)

-clothing layering

-Create a style like tool

-hair gradients

-modular hairstyles

-Horses? maybe, eventually

-facial hair

-mobility aids

Monetization and Multiplayer

The hub

This is what worries the most and i admit that i feel the same way, from what they told us “The Hub” was presented during EA’s investor day as an space where all the sims games meet, it would include common creators tool, a shared gallery and the ability to port objects from one game to another.

We also know that the latest playtest for project rene was focus on that aspect as it was called “The Sims labs: The hub” hinting that maybe the main focus of this sims shared space would be Project rene another strong reason to believe this is the files found in the test after it was datamined. (Also one of the hairs from high school years is used here)

It also could work as a public server for people to show off their creations or meet with people (creepy)

Monetization

this is a list of possible ways for them to milk the hell out of this

-In game currancy (probably for purchase)

-Market place, which include a for you page recommending cosmetics or ugc for you to buy

-Seasonal pass, a subscription system in exchange of periodic rewards

-DLC

-CC and maybe scripted mods (if those exist) are also going to be included in the market place behind a paywall (great for creators imo)

Multiplayer

-Is completely optional, even if the game was just server based you’d still have the option to play it alone.

-Different types of multiplayer in rene:

  • Joining a friend or having your friends join your neighborhood
  • Lobby based multiplayer with random people

-Is available in live mode, build buy (probably cas in some way but we still dont know)

-it also includes messages, chat, voice chat, block and kick out options

there's more to include but I've been keeping this for so long that I couldn't keep it any longer (also it was intended to be posted yesterday lol)
